I have just been checking and updating the situation with Newcastle United players and how close they are to suspension in the three competitions, this update coming after the derby on Sunday when four NUFC players were booked.

So how many yellow cards have been accumulated in the Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup, seeing how close they are to missing matches.

The Premier League rules are that if you pick up five bookings in the opening 19 PL games of the season, you get a one match suspension.

Then 10 yellow cards within the first 32 PL games of the season earns a two game ban.

With a three game suspension if you manage to pick up 15 yellow cards in a Premier League season.

After 16 Newcastle United matches in the Premier League this season, here is the situation with PL yellow cards..

The 2025/26 Premier League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:

Bruno 4, Joelinton 3, Burn 3(*), Thiaw 2, Ramsey 2, Livramento 1, Trippier 1, Pope 1, Tonali 1, Willock 1

(Dan Burn has actually picked up five yellows in total but only three of them count towards the accumulated total for suspension purposes, as two came in the Brentford match and that brought a red card and instant one game suspension)

The headline news on this, is that our inspirational captain Bruno Guimaraes now has to get through the Chelsea, Man U and Burnley matches without picking up a fifth booking within the opening 19 Premier League games, or else it will be a one game suspension.

Joelinton needs to avoid picking up two bookings in these next three PL matches. Whilst sadly Dan Burn is no longer two bookings away from a Premier League suspension, as the very painful injuries he picked up on Sunday, are set to keep him out for up to six weeks or so.

What about Champions League and potential suspension for Newcastle United players?

These are the UEFA rules…

Article 63.02
From the first match in the league phase, players and team officials are suspended for the next competition match after three cautions, that did not result in a red card, as well as after any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).

Article 63.03
Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward to the next stage of the competition, except in the cases described in Article 63.04 below.

Article 63.04
Exceptionally, all yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire on completion of the play-offs. They are not carried forward to the league phase. In addition, all yellow cards expire on completion of the quarter-finals. They are not carried forward to the semi-finals.

The 2025/26 Champions League leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:

Burn 2, Joelinton 2, Thiaw 2, Ramsdale 1, Gordon 1, Willock 1

As you can see, after the Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 draw, now Thiaw, Burn and Joelinton only one more yellow card away from a one game suspension.

What about the Carabao Cup and potential suspension for Newcastle United players?

In the Carabao Cup, two yellow cards in the competition will lead to a one match ban, but slates are wiped clean at the quarter-final stage.

The 2025/26 Carabao Cup leaderboard for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:

Joelinton 1, Thiaw 1, Trippier 1, Schar 1

As United are now at the quarter-final stage (play Fulham on 17 December) we are fine on this front.
