The question we were asking Newcastle United fans yesterday was: Newcastle United win the Carabao Cup, last 16 of Champions League, but finish Premier League mid-table, is it success or failure?
We are now four months into the 2025/26 season and very mixed results.
In the Premier League it is played 16, won 6, drawn 4, lost 6.
However, it has been smooth passage through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals for a fourth season in a row, the last round seeing Spurs defeated to take Newcastle United into a last eight home tie with Fulham on Wednesday.
We also have of course the welcome distraction of the Champions League, Eddie Howe and his team picking up 10 points in six games so far, putting themselves into a great position to reach at least the play-offs for the last 16 knockout stages.
So the complete picture this season so far, in all competitions:
Played 24 Won 11 Drawn 5 Lost 8
If at the end of the 2025/26 season it is a case of: Newcastle United win the Carabao Cup, get to the last 16 of Champions League, but finish Premier League mid-table. Would that represent a successful season, or a failure?
The votes have now been counted and the results are:
40% saying it would be failure
60% saying that would be success
I have to say, I find this quite astonishing.
Not that the majority (60%) of Newcastle United fans who voted, thought these outcomes would represent success.
Instead, it is the fact that two in five (40%) of those Newcastle United fans voting, think that winning the Carabao Cup and getting to the knockout stages of the Champions League, but finishing mid-table in the Premier League, would be a season of failure!
