I saved sending this article to The Mag until after the Newcastle 2 Burnley 1 game, as I look to draw comparisons between Newcastle United ‘back then’ and what is the situation now.
Just over four years ago we got Eddie Howe instead of Mr Creosote and as you all know, the rest is history.
Newcastle United have won a cup, Champions League qualifications etc etc.
Eddie Howe’s side are now a team who can give most sides a game.
However, there seem to be question marks around our ability to hold onto a lead, or even a point at the end. Newcastle United have shown themselves to be pretty useless in my opinion.
It has got that bad, I check the board when it is held up at 90 minutes, to see if it does display a number or the word “panic”. Maybe they should play that song at full time.
Anyway, I digress. So let me take you back three and a half years.
Newcastle United are away at Burnley and winning 2-1. Burnley need to win to stay up.
Into injury time and here’s my point. We went absolutely crazy. We pressed them more than apples in Somerset. Allan Saint-Maximin had their full back penned in his own half. He wouldn’t let him move an inch forward. ASM!! Yes, the player who couldn’t defend.
We had a fit Wilson pressing their keeper. It was amazing to watch. It was like we were on speed once the board went up. Incredible.
I have chatted to my son about that game. He remembered it too. We just upped the effort to incredible levels in injury time.
Fast forward to Saturday at St James’ Park.
Burnley down to ten men. They had lost five in a row. Yet they are pushing us back and scoring in injury time yet again.
Now if Eddie Howe wants to learn anything from yesterday, he ought to compare these two games against three and a half years apart and the absence of the low block or the 5-5. Ditto for the game v Spurs.
Newcastle United were the better team all game, so why change things and bottle it in injury time yet again?
We’ve all seen the sign “GET INTO THEM”.
Well to my knowledge it doesn’t say “for 90 mins only” and it doesn’t say “defend and panic” on the other side either.
