This is how the full Premier League table currently now looks on the morning of Monday 8 December 2025:
As you can see, Sunderland are eighth in the full Premier League table.
However, with the Premier League so tight at the moment, Newcastle United are only one point behind the Mackems and indeed, only three points off fifth and four points off top four.
Looking at the Premier League form table more closely, the last four games have seen Villa pick up 12 points, then Newcastle United next with 10 points. Then Palace, Everton and Man City nine points from a maximum 12, Everton and Man City winning all three of their other last four games, each losing to Newcastle United in their other match. Sunderland with four points from their last four matches.
Very early in the season, Sunderland fans keen to shout ‘mind the gap’, reality now is that if Newcastle United win this 16th Premier League match of the season they will have a two points gap on Sunderland. More importantly though, it would mean closing in on the top four/five in the table and making it 13 points from a possible 15. A big match on Sunday in more ways than one.
